Taking Care of Your Mental Health During Times of Uncertainty
When an unexpected or stressful situation impacts our community, it’s completely normal to experience feelings of fear, anxiety, worry, or uncertainty. Whether you are directly affected by the situation or feeling overwhelmed by concern for your family, friends, and neighbors, your feelings are valid.
During times like these, it’s important to remember to take care of your mental health, too.
A few gentle reminders for today:
• Focus on what you can control. Follow official safety instructions and take things one step at a time.
• Limit constant news and social media updates. Stay informed through reliable sources, but give yourself permission to take breaks from scrolling.
• Ground yourself in the present. Take a few slow breaths, notice your surroundings, and remind yourself to focus on the next step rather than every possible outcome.
• Stay connected. Check in with loved ones, offer reassurance when appropriate, and remember that you don’t have to navigate difficult moments alone.
• Give yourself grace. Stress can affect everyone differently. It’s okay to feel anxious, have trouble concentrating, or need extra support during uncertain times.
Most importantly, if you are in an affected area, please prioritize your physical safety and follow directions from local emergency officials.
You don’t have to have all the answers today. Take things one moment at a time, and remember that asking for support is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Our thoughts are with everyone in our community who may be feeling the weight of this situation. Please take care of yourselves and one another.
